NIL Deal Checklist
Protect Yourself Before You Sign
Landing an NIL deal is exciting — but before you put your name on the dotted line, it’s important to slow down and make sure every detail is in order. A rushed or poorly reviewed contract can hurt your eligibility, limit your future opportunities, or leave money on the table.
This checklist is designed to help student-athletes in Louisiana and across the country navigate NIL agreements with confidence.
your nil checklist
step 1: understand
the basics
✔ Confirm the company or individual you’re working with is legitimate.
✔ Make sure you know exactly what the deal requires (social posts, appearances, events, merchandise, etc.).
✔ Clarify how and when you’ll be paid (cash, products, royalties, or a mix).
step 4: protect
yourself legally
✔ Have the contract reviewed by an attorney or trusted advisor.
✔ Keep copies of everything you sign.
✔ Ask questions if anything is unclear — don’t assume.
✔ Avoid verbal deals — always get agreements in writing.
step 2: Review the Contract Terms
✔ Payment Terms – Know how much you’re getting paid, when, and how.
✔ Length of Agreement – Check how long the contract lasts.
✔ Exclusivity – See if the deal prevents you from working with competing brands.
✔ Usage Rights – Understand how your name, image, and likeness will be used, and for how long.
✔ Termination Clauses – Know under what conditions the contract can be ended (by you or the company).
step 5: plan for
taxes
✔ NIL income is taxable — set aside a portion for state and federal taxes.
✔ Keep receipts and records of related expenses (travel, gear, etc.).
✔ Consider opening a separate bank account for NIL earnings to stay organized.
step 3: protect your eligibility
✔ Review your school’s NIL policy carefully.
✔ Ensure the deal doesn’t conflict with NCAA guidelines.
✔ Disclose the agreement to your school’s compliance office before you sign.
step 6: think long term
✔ Ask if the deal helps build your personal brand or if it might hurt your reputation.
✔ Be careful about exclusivity that blocks future opportunities.
✔ Make sure the brand aligns with your values and image.
✔ Keep track of all NIL activity in one place (contracts, payments, disclosures).
